Can security cameras make money?
From EZWatch Wiki
At a quick glance a security camera system for a business looks like just another expense, another painful cost of doing business. In fact when funds are tight a video surveillance system is usually the first thing deleted from an operating budget. However, if the true value of a video surveillance system was understood it would be one of the last things deleted from a budget.
So how do you make money with security camera’s. The following metaphor can help explain. Let’s look at a candy machine. The machine has a substantial up from cost, but as long as you refill the candy supply the machine sits there like the perfect employee making you a little bit of money everyday. This small profit over time pays for the cost of the machine and at a certain point the machine is paid for and now everyday you have a net profit from your investment.
Security Cameras in a retail environment are no different. Installed in a retail store they sit there and quietly, consistently make you money. How? All retail businesses have a certain level of theft, which they call inventory shrinkage. This theft of inventory, usually 2-5% of their total sales must be calculated into the sale price of the products which are actually sold. National statistics confirm a well designed video surveillance system can reduce theft or inventory shrinkage as much as 30-50%.
So let’s say a small retail convenience store sells $10,000 a day and they have a shrinkage of 3%. They are loosing $300 net profit each day. With an effect video surveillance system installed costing around $1,200 lets say the theft is reduced 40%. This means they are saving or retaining $120 net profit each day! The video surveillance system is completely paid for in 10 days. And after that, the system generates as much as $36,000 additional net profit per year.
Now granted this example is hypothetical but it is based on national statistics. The fact of the matter is Security Camera Systems are a smart investment with consistent net profit returns. There is one painful reality to this concept. Make no bones about it. The video surveillance system does not stop the theft, more likely it simply deters the person from stealing from your store. They will probably go find another store without a camera system to target. Don’t let that be your store.
